Letters to family in Iowa discuss camp life, regimental activities, news of the war, interactions with other regiments and civilians, activity while at New Madrid, Mo. including frequent confiscation from those abetting the Confederacy, battles at Iuka, Corinth and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Letter, Sept 7, 1861 gives his reasons why he believes Col Wm. Worthington is a "secesh sympathizer" and states that if he leads them into "an engagement I am of the opinion that by accident he will be left on the field." After Worthington is killed by one of his men and Charles Matthies is considered for command, he states" Old Dutchy is drunk half the time and asleep the other half ... everybody hates him." Gives his opinion on many things including battles, army officers, and states he would as soon shoot "a copperhead as a southern soldier". After the battle of Chattanooga most of his letters come from Huntsville, Alabama. Four diaries give more discussion of his life in the army.
